Studio Specifics

Q. Where is the Punchpress studio?
It’s located in a separate building behind our central Austin house. We are in the Northfield neighborhood, north of Hyde Park near the North Loop business district.

Q: What supplies should I bring?
For all workshops, I’ll supply your basic materials. I recommend bringing a notebook and rags (t-shirts, old sheets) for cleaning the press.

Q. What kind of solvents do you use?
I use odorless mineral spirits.

Q. What should we wear?
Clothes that you don’t mind getting ink stained and comfortable shoes.

Q. Should I bring my lunch or snacks?
Yes, we have a small refrigerator if you’d like to bring food and drinks. Our studio is close to coffee shops and food carts.

Q. Should I have a project in mind before the first class?
It’s up to you. In the Foundation workshop, we are learning to use the press and exploring the process. You are welcome to come with a general idea for a project or develop one during the workshop.

Q. Can my friend come with me to the studio?
No, only registered participants are allowed in the studio during workshops or rented studio time. We want to be sure there is enough space for registered participants to focus on their projects. (See all Workshop Rules and Terms at bottom of page.)

Q. Can I take video and photos during my workshop?
You may snap a few photos, but we will hold these activities to specific time windows. Punchpress is a place to take a break from digital devices and engage with physical making processes. (See all Workshop Rules and Terms.)
No video, please.

Missed Workshops: Punchpress does not offer make-up sessions for missed workshops.

Studio Guests: Only registered participants are allowed in the studio during workshops or rented studio time. We want to be sure there is enough space for people to focus on their projects.

Utilizing Punchpress

Q. Can I print my wedding invitations (or other announcements) at Punchpress?
Yes, but first you need to take a Punchpress workshop and then sign up for private studio rental time. Additionally, we should discuss the details of your invitation to determine if you would be using polymer plate or metal type. Polymer plate invitations would require that you have Illustrator or InDesign skills.

Q. Can I use the press at Punchpress?
If you have taken a Punchpresss workshop you may sign up for private rental time.

If you took a Punchpress class years ago or have previous printing experience with other presses, we ask that you take a workshop here before renting studio time to gain (or regain) your footing on our press.

Q. Can you help me find a used press to purchase?
If you are interested in purchasing a press, I recommend you visit Briar Press or Boxcar Press. These websites have extensive information about supplies, printing, and all other things letterpress.
