Book by Lorena Howard-Sheridan and Meredith Miller

Printed and bound in a limited edition of 30.

This workbook was composed with various digital technologies, along with mechanical and manual work; it contains an acrylic stencil with shapes for drawing forms, adhesive stickers to construct characters from the outside-in, and an assortment of paper printed with different grids, blocks, and other surprises. It includes a brief introduction to drawing modular letterforms, together with illustrations, prompts and samples. Its pages are not precious: this an unfinished object, meant to be completed by its owner.

For the assembly of the edition, we used laser engraving and perforation, photographic methods and relief printing that produce a contrast between—say—the sharpness of vector graphics and the tactile tension of wood printing. Consequently, each volume from this short edition is—at this point in time—, a bit different from the others.

The design of this publication is the result of cooperation between people of different areas of interest, levels of experience and age—which is to say, our workbook is one story among many. Its process involved hands-on experimentation, workshops, print tests and research on the use of mixed technologies, a first edition, about six prototypes, many a conversation about texture, color, orientation and layout, language choices, and annoying little problems. It took curiosity, humor and a serious time investment to get completed.

Modular Type Elements is filled with ciphered messages and open endings, in the hope that it will give you the same kind of joy that it has brought to our practice. As a publication, it is endlessly collaborative, so you are invited to share your samples on our Face Book page, or on the media network of your choice, under #ModularTypeElements.
